Minister Malusi Gigaba briefs media on combating Home Affairs crimes, 24 Jul

Media statement on sentencing of former official

The Department of Home Affairs welcomes the sentencing of Ms Primrose Dyonase, a former departmental official, by the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday, 23 July 2015. Ms Dyonase was sentenced to 11 years - three years suspended- for crimes related to fraud and corruption. She will serve an effective eight years in prison.

Ms Dyonase submitted falsified travel and subsistence claims between January and December 2012 totaling more than R145 000. She had paid gratification to the tune of R45 000 to former senior accounting clerk, Mr Selby Skosana, who is serving six years in prison. Ms Dyonase's pension fund has been frozen while the Asset Forfeiture Unit has been granted a confiscation order to recover the amount defrauded.

The Department of Home Affairs believes the sentencing of Ms Dyonase will serve as a deterrent to officials who intend to engage in fraud and corruption activities.

Minister Malusi Gigaba will later today outline steps taken by the department to combat these crimes while also giving an update on recent successes.
