Minister Zulu to update on measures to address the recommendations of the financial action task force mutual evaluation report

As part of measures to address the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force, Minister Zulu will provide an update to the public regarding the registration and de-registration of non-compliant Non-Profit Organisations.

The Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) sector is one of the most important institutions which serve as an extension of service delivery to poor and vulnerable South Africans who constantly depend on basic social services, in the form of food, clothing, and rehabilitation. Some of these NPOs also provide housing, rehabilitation for persons with substance abuse addiction and the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.

To this end, the Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, will on Sunday, 25 June, give an update on the significance of NPO compliance, Deregistration, and the anti-substance abuse programme.

Following the public outcry on the NPO deregistration in 2012, the department introduced a developmental approach to support non-compliant NPOs, by conducting roadshows across the country to assist non-compliant NPOs to do the right thing in line with the NPO Act 71 of 1997. After this process, the Minister of Social Development have since approved the lifting of the moratorium and the commencement of the deregistration for non-compliant NPOs.

The Minister will in the build-up to the International Commemoration of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, under the theme, “People first: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention”, update South Africans about progress and plans in the fight against substance abuse problem in the country.
