Members of the media are invited to attend a media briefing to be addressed by the Minister of Trade and Industry (DTI), Dr Rob Davies on the draft Promotion and Protection of Investment Bill.
In April 2010, Cabinet instructed the DTI to initiate work towards a Foreign Investment Act that would strengthen South Africa’s investment regime to ensure that:
i) South Africa remains open to foreign direct investment (FDI);
ii) South Africa provides adequate protection to FDI; and
iii) that these objectives are balanced with the right of government to regulate in the national and public interest.
The bill seeks to achieve several balances between the rights and obligations of investors; to provide adequate protection to all investors, including foreign investors; to ensure that South Africa’s constitutional obligations are upheld, and that government retains the policy space to regulate in the public interest.
