Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande to brief media on the outcome of the meeting with the University of Zululand Council on recent security concerns at the university and the construction of Sol-Tech University
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande, met with the University of Zululand Council to receive a report on the state of security at the University of Zululand. The meeting took place, yesterday, Friday 20 September in Durban.
The meeting follows reported incidences of violence, intimidation and the shooting of a student from an off-campus residence.
These incidences led to amongst others, the protest by students in which they barricaded the main road to the university, the disruption of teaching and learning at the university and adjacent schools, including the burning of a satellite police station.
To this extent, all the university activities has been suspended from the 17th September 2019.
Minister Nzimande invites members of the media to the briefing on the outcome of the meeting with Council and to announce interventions undertaken by government to restore peace and stability at this university and other affected universities.
Minister Nzimande will be joined by the Council of the University and the Vice Chancellor during the media briefing.
Minister Nzimande will also brief members of the media on the department’s position on the construction of the Solidarity new Sol-Tech university campus in Centurion-Pretoria.
