Media briefing

Deputy Minister of Transport Mr Jeremy Cronin will brief the media on progress regarding the investigation into illegally converted panel vans being operated as mini-bus taxis.

On 4 August 2009, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele announced that the national Department of Transport had initiated an investigation into illegally converted panel vans, which were being operated as minibus-taxis. The Department of Transport has since made considerable progress with regards to this investigation. As part of the investigation, extensive safety testing pertaining to brake testing, tilt testing, roll-over protection and seat and seatbelt anchorage has been carried out on these vehicles. Based on the investigation, an operational plan has been prepared by the Department of Transport. Details of the operational plan and the way forward will be announced by Deputy Minister Cronin at the media briefing on 5 March 2010.
