Details of the event are as follows:

Date: Friday, 23 October 2009
Time: 18h30 for 19h00
Venue: Meropa Casino, Polokwane, Limpopo

In July 2009, Transport Ministers from Africa concluded a conference on road safety in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania by calling for a "Decade of Action for Road Safety" on the continent. This conference said Africa had the most dangerous roads in the world! Africa had only avoided a catastrophic explosion of road deaths because of relatively low motorisation and an undeveloped road network.

To this end, the main objective of the Driver of The Year (DoTY) competition is to prevent and reduce crashes on the roads. It also serves as an evaluation and training tool to assess the skills and knowledge of drivers. This programme equips the participants with skills that not only empower them but their employers as well through fleet management and safe driving.

The competition contestants are selected through a rigorous process from regional and provincial championships. The DoTY will be contested in seven categories - Articulated Truck Code EC, Rigid Truck above 16 000 kilograms (Code C1), Rigid Truck above 6 000 kilograms (Code C1), Bus above 16 000 kilograms (CodeC1), Special categories for Ladies Bus above 16 000 (Code C1), Delivery van below 3 500 kilograms (Code B and EB), Rigid truck with four wheel trailer (Code EC1).
