South Africa's Department of Sport and Recreation (SRSA) and the German
Development Bank (KfW) will officially be handing over to the people of Winterveld (Tshwane Municipality), a football "kick–about" facility
The "kick-about" is part of the youth development against violence through sport programme that is been run by SRSA and KfW with the purpose of using sport, specifically football, as a catalyst for transmitting life skills to children and youth in order to reduce violence and social ills.
Amongst the dignitaries attending the event will be Germany’s Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Dirk Niebel, Sport and Recreation Director-General Mr Vernie Peterson and representatives from Department of Basic Education, Tshwane Municipality and Tshwane Sports Council.
This facility is one of the seven, which have been constructed as part of the pilot project. The whole project is envisaged to construct or rehabilitate over 100 kick-about and pitches as well as to provide basic football equipment to children in the township and poor rural areas.
The project is intended to keep children off the streets; give them an opportunity to learn about rules and fair-play and practice conflict resolution without violence. It also marks the beginning of what promises to be a long and beneficial relationship between SRSA, KfW and communities.
