Johannesburg: Transport Minister, honourable Sibusiso Ndebele will introduce the Air Traffic Flow Management Tool (ATFM) as part of the October Transport Month 2009 campaign.

Among others, this highly integrated system will assist with collaborative information flow between the Air Traffic Control, Airport Operations and the Aircraft Operators regarding strategic and tactical real time and future use of any airspace and airport situation. The project will also support Green ATM by ensuring the achievement of lesser fuel burning for the majority of flights thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In the second phase of the visit the Minister together with the MEC for Roads and Transport in Gauteng Mr Bheki Nkosi, Chairperson of Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) Mr Mpho Mamashela, CEO of South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) Mr Nazzir Alli and other key transport stakeholders will go on a guided site tour at the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Scheme (GFIS) around Johannesburg.

The GFIS is part of government's plan of developing a world "class national road network as a driver of economic growth. The programme has seen the national road infrastructure grow to over 16 000 kilometres in just over a decade, injecting approximately R29 billion into the economy and R13 billion into provisional gross geographic product, creating approximately 30 000 direct jobs over its lifecycle.

The initiative which crosses the Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane metropolitan boundaries will widen freeways to at least four lanes in both directions and in some sections up to six lanes.

The details of the event are as follows:
