MEC for housing Mrs Nombulelo Mabandla will award performing contractors, builders, material suppliers and municipalities who performed well in housing delivery process. This will be done through the provincial chapter of Govan Mbeki housing awards aimed at recognising the role played by contractors, material suppliers, mining sector, housing students and media houses in housing delivery.
The Govan Mbeki Housing awards is an initiative of the national department aimed at recognising the contribution made by all sector role players and stakeholders towards accelerating housing delivery for 2008/09 financial year.The awards consist of two categories for the provincial and national categories. Overall provincial winners in each category will proceed to participate in the national awards at the end of the year.
The purpose of the awards is to motivate all stakeholders in the housing industry to harness human and other resources in accelerating housing delivery to improve the lives of millions of the poor by building sustainable human settlements, providing a choice of quality housing opportunities with secure tenure and access to water and sanitation and social, economic and recreational facilities.
The awards seeks to honour the role players in the housing value chain, including developers, building contractors, the banking sector, community based organisations, the mining sector, building materials suppliers, professional associations that have committed to partner with government in building sustainable human settlements and making the millennium development goals of eradicating informal settlements achievable by 2014.
The awards provide an opportunity for sharing information, lessons learnt, the strengthening of existing and the development of new partnerships and the replication of successful initiatives.The awards will be held at Feather market Hall at Govan Mbeki Avenue in Nelson Mandela Metro on 21 July 2009, starting at 18h00.
