MEC Yawa to launch provincial 2010 Firearm Amnesty campaign

In an effort to reduce violent crime involving firearms, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa is to formally launch the 2010 provincial Firearm Amnesty campaign at the Rustenburg taxi rank on Friday, 5 March 2010.

The nationwide campaign which started on the 11 January and ends on 11 April 2010 under the slogan: “Awulethe Umshini Wakho-Surrender your Firearm”, is intended to eliminate the circulation of illegal firearms and ammunition which contributes to serious and violent crime as well as firearm related crimes.

The campaign in the North West is supported by the provincial Community Policing Board, Business Against Crime North West, The provincial Chapter of Gun Free South Africa, the provincial House of Traditional Leaders, faith based organisations, the taxi industry, private security companies and local municipalities.
