MEC Sebegoe and Auditor-General engage municipalities on 2010/11 audit report

The North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Paul Sebegoe, will on Thursday, 15 March 2012, at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, engage with municipalities on the outcome of the 2010/11 audit report which will be presented by the Auditor-General, Mr Terrence Nombembe on the same day.

The session will also allow municipalities to engage with the MEC and Auditor-General on the challenges that they (municipalities) experience when implementing the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), and to agree on an approach of addressing these challenges.

MFMA aims to put in place a sound financial governance framework, by clarifying and separating the roles and responsibilities of the mayor, executive and non-executive councillors and officials.

In the 2009/10 report of municipalities, the North West province was cited as one of the provinces where more than half of the municipalities did not submit their financial statements for audit within the legislated time frames.

This has adverse implications for the timely exercise of oversight by those charged with governance and may defer the opportunity for accelerated movement towards achievement of clean administration.
