MEC Sebego to launch provincial disaster relief campaign

The North West MEC for Local Goverment and Traditional Affairs Paul Sebego will on Thursday, 3 March 2011 host a breakfast meeting with the business community from around the North West province at the Mmabatho Convention Centre (07h45 am) to solicit their support for the provincial Disaster Relief Campaign.

The department has allocated R3,5 million for immediate to short term humanitarian relief interventions as part of the Disaster Relief Campaign that includes repairs of houses, disaster awareness and educational campaigns. 

MEC Sebego has held talks with mining companies and banking institutions in the province requesting them to assist with the immediate provision of basic essential services such as water, food, and housing for some of the victims. This campaign comes after some areas such areas of the province were hit by heavy floods over the past months. 

Significant damage to formal and informal housing, roads and other infrastructure has been reported in the Greater Taung, Kagisano, Ratlou, Tswaing, Ditsobotla, Ramotshere Moiloa, Mafikeng, Moretele, Madibeng, Bloemhof and Moses Kotane and Matlosana local municipalities. 

Meanwhile, about 110 private homes, 20 farms and 2 holiday resorts area have been affected. Approximately 1 100 hectors of crops have been damaged and livestock has been lost. It is estimated that a R123, 3 million will be needed for repairs and rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure and humanitarian relief in the province.
