MEC Ntombi Mekgwe to visit train accident victims

Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC Ntombi Mekgwe will be visiting train accident victims who have been admitted at three Gauteng hospitals to wish them speedy recovery tomorrow morning.

More than 600 people were injured yesterday when two train collided in Meadowlands, Soweto. Two people were critically injured and were airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital saw 200 victims and 13 of those are still at the hospital.

At Helen Joseph, 106 victims were seen and three patients were admitted.

Ninety of the victims were taken to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and 10 are still at the hospital with five of them in serious condition.

Also yesterday (Thursday), a school bus was involved in an accident and seven children were taken to Mamelodi Hospital.  None of them were critical, they were examined and discharged.

“I would like to thank emergency workers who were at the scene of the train accident and assisted in stabilising patients.  Health workers who provided medical care at the different hospitals helped to prevent a possible disaster,” said MEC Mekgwe.
