MEC Norman Mokoena to visit Thembisile Hani Local Municipality

The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Norman Mokoena accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Nkangala District, Councillor Speedy Mashilo will tomorrow, 24 March 2010 visit the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality. The aim of the visit is for the MEC to assess the situation and engage with relevant stakeholders with an aim of restoring calm, law and order to the area. The visit follows recent incidents of unrest in the area.

MEC Mokoena has condemned in the strongest possible terms the unwarranted violence and malicious destruction of property, by certain residents in the Thembisile Hani Municipality. He has appealed to the community not to allow criminal elements to intimidate people, vandalise and destroy public property. “People must not take the law into their hands. We respect people rights to protest, however such protests must be within the ambit of the law. As government we will not allow people to use violence to express their grievances,” said Mokoena.

MEC Mokoena has appealed for restraint and calm from all the people of Thembisile Hani. He has also urged law enforcement agents to take every possible step to investigate, apprehend and ensure that the perpetrators of violence and intimidation are brought to book and face the full might of the law.
