MEC for Gauteng Community Safety, Khabisi Mosunkutu will tomorrow conduct raids to taverns 500 meters from the school, as part of the Hlayiseka school safety programme. Eight schools affected by the proximity to a liquor outlet will be visited during the raid to investigate compliance to the Liquor Amendment Act of 2003 in and around Soweto.
The move is also informed by the outcomes from the Hlayiseka school safety programme that has revealed a correlation between school performance and substance abuse. Complaints were also received from principals and parents.
