The MEC for the Mpumalanga Department of Education, Mrs Reginah Mhaule will table her 2011/12 policy and budget speech at the Provincial Legislature on Tuesday, 24 May 2011 at 14h00.
The MEC tables this budget speech having recorded a long list of milestones in her quest to deliver quality education in the province.
This includes but is not limited to the following:
- Improvement of the Grade 12 results by 8.9% making Mpumalanga province the forth most improved province in the country
- Collaboratively managed an incident free 2010 Grade 12 examinations
- Developed and lead the implementation of the intervention programmes that ensured that Bushbuckridge District improved its Grade 12 results by 12%.
- Reduced the number of underperforming schools from 66 in 2009 to 19 in 2010.
- Instituted the team to investigate the manner in which Internal Assessment is conducted by schools and tabled the recommendation at the recently held Education Indaba
- Consulted with provincial stakeholders on Action Plan 2014 Towards Schooling 2025
- Pioneered activities for school infrastructure development thereby indentifying and eradicated 253 unsafe schools and mud schools.
- Put into action the construction of school hostels at Twyfelhoek in Gert Sibande, Shongwe Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Nkomazi Municipality, as well as anotherfacility in Emakhazeni Municipality to ensure that children from farms, orphans and poverty stricken children benefit from the provisioning of quality education in the province.
- Revitalised Comprehensive Secondary schools
- Increased the number of no fee schools
- Extended the provisioning of School Nutrition to Secondary Schools
- Lead the Quality Teaching and Learning campaign
- Appointed Ms Dolly Sono, a Cum Laude Student teacher from Siyabuswa to lead a campaign to encourage learners to take teaching as a career of choice.
- Appointed Ms Mpumalanga 2011, Mpumi Lephoko to be the ambassador for the Compulsory Schooling Campaign to encourage children of school going age to register in schools and learn and to urge those who are already in school not to drop out.
- The list goes on.
The MEC will use the occasion to take forward the injunction by the President that this year the focus in education will be on the Triple T. (i.e. teachers, text and time.)
