MEC Mekgwe to open Kangaroo Mother Care unit at Tshwane District Hospital

Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC Ntombi Mekgwe will tomorrow open Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) unit at Tshwane District Hospital.

The KMC or Skin to Skin Care is a simple, effective, inexpensive and low technology on caring for premature and low birth weight babies. It can be extended to full term babies. This technique assists in achieving one of the department’s priorities, the reduction of neonatal deaths.

The benefits of KMC include the provision of warmth, the mother’s body temperature maintains and regulates the temperature and respiration of the baby, ensures weight gain and growth of head circumference, fulfils the mother with self-confidence and competence in taking care of her babies needs and bonding between mother and baby is strengthened.
