Gauteng MEC for Health and Social Development, Ntombi Mekgwe, will on Sunday, 8 May 2011 join nurses in commemoration of International Nurses Day.
The International Council of Nurses has declared 12 May as the International Nurses Day in remembrance of Florence Nightingale who is considered as the founder of modern nursing. In South Africa, the first black nurse Cecilia Makiwane is also remembered.
The nurses are seen by society as contributing immensely to health care services in the province. South Africa is considered one of the countries with the best trained and innovative nurses in the world.
The message in this year’s theme, 'Nurses Increasing Access and Equity' ensures a long and healthy life for all South Africans.
