MEC Mekgwe to commemorate Chris Hani Day

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development MEC Ntombi Mekgwe will on Saturday, 9 April 2011 unveil the amended name of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.  

The new hospital name, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital reflects the central role that this institution plays in the training and development of health professionals in the country. 

The province produces a third of the country's doctors and the majority of them train at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. At the moment, the hospital has 169 trainee doctors. Some of the outstanding doctors whom had an association with this hospital include the late Dr Nthato Motlana who was the regarded as the father of black economic empowerment.  

A sod turning for the construction of a museum that will reflect the important history of this hospital will also take place on this day. 

The hospital is renowned as the biggest in the Southern hemisphere comprising of about 3 000 beds and provides medical care to more than 3 million people in Soweto, surrounding areas as well as other provinces such as Mpumalanga and North West provinces. 

Achievements of the hospital include groundbreaking surgeries such as the separation of conjoined Mathibela twins, Mpho and Mphonyana.  

Activities for the day include: 

  • Painting of one of the hospital wards: 08h00 – 10h00
  • unveiling of amended hospital name and sod turning for the hospital museum: 12h00 – 14h00
  • Chris Hani memorial lecture conducted by Dr Aaron Motsoaledi: 18h00-21h00
