MEC Mekgwe to address Youth Summit in Springs

Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC Ntombi Mekgwe will address the youth on social development and their involvement in improving and taking ownership of their health at the opening of the annual youth summit this morning at KwaThema in Springs.

The summit’s main purpose is to address priority areas affecting youth. It seeks to strengthen partnerships between the department and youth groups, to encourage youth to participate in health related issues, and to celebrate cultural diversity.

Under the theme, ‘Be alert, don’t add to your load', there also will be focus issues such as teenage pregnancy, suicide, substance abuse, HIV and AIDS, gender based violence, youth nutrition and physical activity.

About 450 participants from all parts of Gauteng are expected to attend the summit. During the day, there will be health screening on offer where the youth can check their status in relation to high blood pressure, diabetes and HIV and AIDS.
