Eastern Cape MEC for Transport Thandiswa Marawu will officially launch the 2011 October Transport Month Campaign in East London on Tuesday, 4 October 2011.
This is an annual national campaign focusing on the achievements of the transport sector in its effort to provide South Africans with a safe, efficient, affordable and sustainable transportation system.
The 2011 Campaign focuses on job creation and service with a theme: “Year of Job Creation and Service Delivery in the Transport Sector – Moving South Africa to a Better Tomorrow.”
This year’s launch programme will start at the Woodbrook Engen Truck Stop in East London at 9am, where MEC Marawu is expected to launch the new partnership between the Eastern Cape Department of Transport and Engen focusing on truckers’ wellness and career development programmes.
“We acknowledge that truckers, as transporters of goods through our roads (Road Freight) it is important that they acquaint themselves with education and training opportunities in the transport sector both for their own consumption and for their families,” says MEC Marawu.
The wellness centre at the truck stop will test truckers for illnesses, including:
- TB
- HIV
- Blood Pressure
- Diabetics
- Eyesight
This will emphasise that the partnership is about broadening truckers understanding of the sector they are in”Transport the heartbeat of the Economy” and how valuable they are.
From there, MEC Marawu will proceed to Wilsonia, where she will officially open the Wilsonia Driving License Testing Centre at 11am. This event will also be broadcast live by TruFM Youth Radio Station.
