MEC Marawu to launch festive season arrive alive campaign

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport Thandiswa Marawu will officially launch the Provincial 2011/12 Festive Season Arrive Alive Campaign at the Mthatha Civic Centre on Friday, 2 December at 10h00.

As a result of the high number of road accidents happening on the province’s roads, this year’s launch will be marked by a prayer session which will involve various religious organisations, including traditional healers.

This year’s campaign will be further strengthened by the intensification of “Operation Asihleki”, which is the Provincial Campaign that contributes to the implementation of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan. Through this plan, the Eastern Cape law enforcement agencies are expected to stop and screen 85 000 vehicles a month.

Since the start of the implementation of NREP in October 2010, the provinces law enforcement agencies have stopped and screened more than one million vehicles.

With the launch of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 – 2020, road safety has moved from being a national and a continental issue to being a global challenge.

“The time has come to build solid partnerships with everyone, including public transport operators, law enforcement agencies, business, civil society, religious community and community leaders in order to make an indelible contribution to this global campaign, thus making making road safety everybody’s responsibility,” says MEC Marawu.

“This festive season, I would to appeal to long distance vehicles owners to ensure that they have at least two drivers per vehicle in order to deal with the challenge of fatigue,” she emphasised.

Commuters are also expected to play a role by informing our law enforcement agencies of any problems they encounter on our roads through calling our Customer Care Centre toll free number 0800 644 644.
