MEC Marawu to launch Community Road Safety Council Training programme

Eastern Cape Department of Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu will officially launch the Community Road Safety Council Training Programme in East London at Osner Hotel on Tuesday 22 November 2011 at 6pm.

This concept of Community Road Safety Councils (CRSC) is a response to the Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign 2011 to 2020. After the Road Safety Summit that was held in Cape Town (February 2010) a National Steering Committee was elected to assist and facilitate the establishment of Community Road safety Councils in their provinces.

Various organisations and community structures were approached to elect members to serve in the Provincial Steering Committee for the establishment of Local Community Road Safety Councils. The process culminated to the National Launch of the council by the National Minister in September 2010 at Regent Hotel in East London.

Structures in the Districts were encouraged to nominate members to participate in the Local CRSC’s and all six districts have finalised their election and each has 20 democratically elected members.

In March 2011, a total of 120 members were inaugurated by MEC Marawu in East London.

The programme seeks to capacitate the council members with Road Safety information and skills to present departmental programmes and projects to their communities.
