As part of her contribution to the “Take a girl child to work campaign”, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport Thandiswa Marawu will host 20 girls from 10 schools within the Buffalo City Metro on Thursday, 26 May 2011.
The campaign forms part of many corrective measures that have been introduced by the democratic state to address the imbalances of the past with regard to access to economic opportunities. This has been done in collaboration with various social partners such as CellC and other private organisations.
The event aimed at achieving following purposes:
- Expose girl children to the environment of work so as to make informed career decisions that willinspire them to pursue their goals and ambitions.
- Grant these girls an opportunity to learn from positive role models within the organisation.
- Show them how far positive self esteem can get them far in the work environment.
These young girls are from schools such as Bhisho, Nonceba, Enoch Sontonga, St Christophers, Breidbach, David Mama, Sandisiwe, Msobomvu, Jongilanga and Mzokhanyo high schools.
They will be exposed in a number of departmental projects, to showcase opportunities that the transport sector is having for them. This will afford learners an opportunity to interact with departmental officials and beneficiaries of our programmes.
They will be visiting different departmental sites to see for themselves what is being done there on a daily basis, and be afforded an opportunity to experiment that through participation.
Sites to be visited are as follows:
- East London Harbour: 09h00 – 10h00
- AmaBhele train station: 11h00 – 12h00
- Bhisho Airport: 12h45 – 13h00
