MEC Marawu to grace the 2012 Brandhouse Number One Taxi Driver Competition

MEC for Transport, Roads and Works, Thandiswa Marawu will grace the theory and practical testing session of the 2012 Brandhouse Number One Taxi Driver Campaign at Aliwal North on 15 March 2012. This competition is an initiative of Brandhouse in partnership with Road Traffic Management Cooperation and Department of Transport in a bid to educate taxi drivers and other road users about road safety.

It is aimed at taxi drivers who are committed to being the best drivers on the road; it educates them about road safety and commuter safety. This year, the competition will also be held at taxi ranks countrywide, this is to expose the competition to hundreds of taxi drivers as well as commuters.

Participating drivers will be tested on their theory and practical knowledge as well as through advanced and defensive driving procedures.

This competition aims to deliver responsible role models to the taxi industry, and these role models should embody:

  • The true values of responsible driving.
  • Great customer care driven from both the individual driver as well as the taxi owners.

This platform also conveys the following messages:

  • Driver fatigue
  • Disregard for traffic rules
  • Drinking and driving
  • High speed driving
  • Un-roadworthiness of vehicles

Theory and practical testing which will be run by Toyota Advanced Driving (TAD) Academy will run in all nine provinces until April 2012. Both tests will be based on a K53 Test and a Driving and Obstacle Test and a TAD representative will be responsible for the adjudication process. Once the scores from all the tests are added together, the top competitors in each district will advance to the provincial finals.
