MEC Makgoe to deliver the keynote address at the 2009 National Teaching Awards (NTA) provincial ceremony

The MEC for Education in the Free State, Mr Tate Makgoe will on Friday evening, 18 September 2009, deliver the keynote address at the 10th National Teaching Awards (NTA) provincial ceremony to be held at Protea Hotel, Bloemfontein Central.

The NTA is an annual event, initiated in 2000 by the Department of Education to acknowledge and encourage dedicated and caring teachers in their efforts to develop learners as citizens of democratic, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.

Other objectives of the NTA are to:
* focus public attention on the positive aspects of education, thereby raising the public image of the teaching profession
* recognise and promote excellence in teaching performance
* honour dedicated, creative and effective teachers and schools
* encourage best practice in schools
* afford South Africans the opportunity to publicly say thank you to outstanding teams or individual teachers in schools
* reinforce the opinion that successful teaching requires a collective effort from communities, teachers and learners.

The NTA has eight categories, which are as follows:
* Excellence in primary school teaching
* Excellence in secondary school teaching
* Excellence in primary school leadership
* Excellence in secondary school leadership
* Excellence in grade R teaching
* Excellence in inclusive education and special needs teaching
* Excellence in adult basic education and training
* Lifetime achievement award
