MEC Mahlangu opens new forensic ward at Sterkfontein Hospital

In an effort to improve service delivery, Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu will tomorrow officially open a new forensic ward. This ward will assist in assessing awaiting trial detainees at Sterkfontein Hospital in Mogale City.

The forensic unit of Sterkfontein Hospital serves the entire Southern Gauteng region as well as parts of the North West province. Because of the limited number of beds, previously detainees had to wait longer periods for psychological assessments leading to delayed court proceedings.

This new ward with 30 beds will contribute towards reducing the waiting period thus enabling justice to be carried out speedily. In addition to the awaiting trial detainees, the new ward will also cater for high-risk patients that are difficult to manage in other wards.
