MEC Mabandla to host inaugural Joe Slovo memorial lecture

MEC for housing Mrs Nombulelo Mabandla as part of celebrating the Housing Week 1 to 7 October 2009 and World Habitat Day will be hosting a public memorial lecture in honour of the Joe Slovo, the first Minister of Housing in South Africa a champion of low cost housing. The lecture will held today 5 October 2009, 17h00 at Abbotsford Christian Centre.

This lecture is aimed at celebrating the contribution of Joe Slovo in housing development and championing the low cost housing in the country as the first minister of housing.

Panelists include Professor Sipho Buthelezi of Fort Hare University, Professor Nomfundo Luswazi from Walter Sisulu University, Professor Udesh Pillay representing Human Sciences Research Council, Public Service Accountability Monitor, Housing Committee Chairperson Dennis Neer and provincial representatives from the African National Congress (ANC). Members of the public will be allowed to comment or ask question to the panellists.

The theme for the lecture seeks to emphasise the policy shift from housing to creating integrated human settlements. The entire provincial cabinet including the Premier and all other MECs will attend this historic event in the province.

Joe Slovo was the first Minister of Housing who championed low cost housing and advocated for a pro-poor housing delivery agenda and policies. He advocated for a paradigm shift from housing to sustainable human settlements by ensuring amongst other things, that human settlement are closer to economic opportunities, to social amenities.
