MEC on the last leg of the back to school campaign in Umthatha and Mount Fletcher

The Honourable MEC for Social Development and Special Programmes, Ms Pemmy Majodina will visit Mthatha and Mount Fletcher on the 25 and 27 March 2011.

The MEC in Mthatha will handover school uniforms, sanitary towels and toiletries to 160 children. The children were assessed by social workers, and their families will also receive food parcels on the day. The Hon. MEC is continuing with the back to school campaign which kick- started late January, aimed at making the lives of young people better.

Children in the province, are faced with enormous challenges, these range from extreme poverty, physical and sexual abuse, neglect, substance abuse and loss of parents due to HIV and AIDS (which further adds to the creation of child headed households).

Last year, the department utilised R100 000, 00 to supply more than 300 children with school uniforms and suppliers. This year the Department has increased the scope and budget. An amount of R3 million has been set aside for this campaign and 3,800 children will benefit.
