MEC Kasienyane to recognise contribution of older persons in societies

The North West MEC for Health and Social Development, Onewang R Kasienyane will visit families headed by older people at Kanana Township in Klerksdorp on Thursday, 15 October 2009 to offer support and acknowledge their contribution to the society.

The visit will coincide with an event to encourage the public to care for elders through the involvement of communities and advocate for protection, support and dignity of older persons under the theme: “Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the international year of older persons: towards a society for all ages.”

“Older people increasingly play a critical role in society through transmitting experience and knowledge, helping their families with caring responsibilities and increasing their participation in activities that promote healthy living.

Such contributions to development can only be ensured if older persons enjoy adequate levels of protection and support from both government and the public,” says MEC Kasienyane.

Proceedings for the day will start with a visit to identified families at 09h00 followed by a tribute to older persons at Kanana stadium.

The media is invited.
