MEC Jonas to join an Arrive Alive roadblock in Kinkelbos

Acting MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mcebisi Jonas, will join multi-disciplinary roadblock to be held tomorrow on the N2 in Kinkelbos outside Port Elizabeth at 11h00.

The initiative forms part of the festive season Arrive Alive campaign, which has been intensified this week following some very bad accidents and untimely deaths that have been experienced by the province recently and the envisaged high traffic volumes ahead of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Most of the accidents with multiple deaths were involving public transport vehicles and reckless driving, that is: overtaking when unsafe to do so, fatigue as well as excessive speeding. Then the factor of pedestrians being knocked down is also very high and needs urgent intervention.

This season’s Arrive Alive operational plan features nine special focal areas, which include:

* driver fitness: documentation, fatigue, alcohol abuse
* moving violations: barrier lines, red light infringements, cell phones misuse, excessive speeding
* overloading: passenger and public or freight transport vehicles
* vehicle fitness: documentation, roadworthiness and registration plate enforcement
* pedestrian safety: pedestrian jay-walking, drink and walking
* seatbelts: use by front and rear seat passengers
* vehicle visibility: defective front and rear lamps
* following distances: between heavy vehicles, inconsiderate driving
* crime prevention: public safety or pro active policing
