As part of the Executive Council Outreach Programme in the Amathole District, Eastern Cape MEC Ghishma Barry will visit the newly-refurbished King Williams Town train station tomorrow 22 July 2009 at 10h00.
This follows the upgrading of the station at the cost of R8 million in preparations for the introduction of a new daily train service between East London and King Williams Town, which cost Metrorail R1.5 million.
The new service is expected to benefit commuting public between the two towns and surrounding areas, including civil servants. It is in line with governments back to rail strategy, which is supported by a 10 year rail plan that was unveiled by MEC Barry in December 2008 in an effort to revitalise the under-utilised rail infrastructure.
Tomorrow’s proceedings will be as follows:
10h00: Walk about for 15 minutes by MEC Ghishma Barry and Metrorail Regional Manager Mrs Claudia Williams at the station.
10h15: Depart with newly refurbished King Williams Town express for East London, on board presentation on overview of Metrorail services.
11h45: Arrive at East London station, lunch in the Regional Manager’s Boardroom.
12h30: Visit the newly established South African Police Service (SAPS) contact point in East London.
13h00: MEC and entourage depart for Bisho.
Members of the media are invited to join us.
