As part of her Safety and Security Month Programme, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ms Ghishma Barry, will host a media briefing to showcase the province’s progress in receiving firearms from the members of the public tomorrow 18 February, at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Headquarters in Zwelitsha at 13h00.
These firearms will be in display during the media briefing.
This forms part of government’s programme of encouraging people to take the opportunity presented by the firearms amnesty period to surrender their firearms, whether they are legal or illegal. Through this process, members of the public, who have knowledge of whereabouts of firearms and ammunition and all those who inherited firearms and did not apply for licences, are further encouraged to support this initiative, which seeks to minimise the number of firearms in circulation as that contributes to the number of violent criminal activities.
Since 11 January, government has been campaigning to raise awareness about this initiative and to communicate our themes: “Together we can do more against crime”, “Awulethe Umshini Wakho – Surrender your firearm”.
