As part of her First 100 Days Programme, the Honourable MEC for Transport and Safety Ms Ghishma Barry will host a Boxing against Crime Tournament and launch Neighbourhood Watch Programme at Gompo Hall in Duncan Village on Saturday 27 June 2009 at 09h00.
The event forms part of the Department of Safety and Liaison’s mass mobilisation strategy against crime as outlined in MEC Barry’s Policy Speech, which was presented in the Eastern Cape Legislature last week. This event has been organised in partnership with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Community Police Forum, Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, East London Amateur Boxing Organisation and Buffalo City Municipality.
It will be preceded by the boxers’ weigh-in at 08h00, followed by a March against Crime led by the SAPS band from Msimango Street down to Douglas Smith Road to Gompo Hall.
The formal programme will start at 10am with 15 bouts consisting of 26 boys and four girls from East London, Mdantsane, King Williams Town and Kidds Beach. In between these bouts, there will be motivational speeches from former World Champion Vuyani Bungu, Eastern Cape Youth Commissioner Sinethemba Mashalaba and a keynote address by MEC Barry.
