Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ms Ghishma Barry, will honour 71 emerging contractors at an awards ceremony to be held at Latimer’s Landing in East London on Friday at 14h00.
These contractors have completed their empowerment, development and training programme, which cost R29,2 million and involved the upgrade of our road construction and maintenance camps and the construction of the Mthatha Airport temporary building.
68 of these contractors participated in the replacement of the “cold shacks” that were previously used by our workers with the new park homes that were built through the use of alternative building technology provided by Everite Building Products (a Group Five subsidiary) in the Amathole and Chris Hani districts and were skilled in:
* assembling of the units
* plumbing
* painting
* electricity installation
Construction of new and safe park homes is in progress in the OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo districts.
The rest of the contractors have completed the building of the temporary prefabricated structure of the Mthatha Airport terminal building earlier this month, which included the employment of 15 young labourers from the local community and were trained on site by Everite in plumbing and electricity installation.
During this event, MEC Barry will further hand over certificates to nine departmental officials, who recently completed an Introductory Project Management course.
