MEC Ghishma Barry to attend prayer meeting at the R61 accident spot on Thursday

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Safety Ms Ghishma Barry will attend a prayer meeting scheduled for Thursday 9 July 2009 at the accident spot on the R61 towards Port St Johns, where 11 people lost their lives last weekend.

Accident facts:
* On Saturday, 4 July 2009 at about 10h00 an accident occurred on the R61 nearby Ngojini Location.
* A Toyota Quantum with registration number FCK765EC was involved in a hit and run with a Ford Ikon. When approaching a curve the driver of the minibus lost control and went down an embankment rolling several times and instantly killing ten female passengers and injuring eight others, including the driver. One of the other passengers later died at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha bringing the amount to 11 deceased.
* The Toyota Quantum was conveying passengers from Lusikisiki to Mthatha. The injured are hospitalised in Mthatha hospitals and at St Barnabas hospital in Ntlaza. Forensic reports by Accident Investigation Specialist from the Road Traffic Management Corporatoin (RTMC) were conducted on the scene on 5 July 2009.
* Communication with the deceased’s families and the taxi industry are still in progress. An identification process is still being conducted and the following have been identified already:

* Bangani Matsotsotso(Female)
* Fudumele Nonkululeko(Female)

* Ndungane Zanele(Female)
* Makasa Lilelwa (Female)

“On behalf of the Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Transport, I would like to convey our words of condolence to the families. My office has already communicated with the Road Accident Fund to assist the families of the deceased,” says MEC Barry.
