MEC Ghishma Barry to attend ‘Operation Bafazi’ roadblock in Mthatha

As part of the Women’s Month programme, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison Ms Ghishma Barry will attend the ‘Operation Bafazi’ roadblock to be mounted by female traffic officers and South African Police Services (SAPS) members on the N2 near Maweleni outside Mthatha tomorrow at 10h00.

This follows a successful multi-disciplinary roadblock by 30 female officers and road safety officials on Women’s Day at Kei Bridge, where 366 vehicles were stopped and checked. As a result, they also found:
* 17 driving licence cases
* 13 unlicensed motor vehicles
* 14 overloaded vehicles
* four drivers without safety belts
* one public transport vehicle driving without the route permit.

The total number of cases written was 61 worth R23,050

Tomorrow, these officers will be joined by the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in an effort to encourage people to donate blood and save lives.
