The event will be in the form of information sharing and awareness campaign under the theme: “Ensuring work family balance”. The purpose of this theme is to facilitate discussions around on issues that affect family life whilst family members have to working order to fend and support one another. This day is commemorated internationally on the 15 May of every year as it was declared by the UN General Assembly.

This day provides an opportunity to promote awareness relating to families as well as to promote appropriate action. This day can become a powerful mobilising factor on behalf of families in all countries, which avail themselves of this opportunity and demonstrate support to family issues appropriate to each society.

The family through implementation of developmental programmes must be able to support its members whether physically or psychologically, it is for this reason that the Department of Social Development and Special Programmes regards the family as the focal point of service delivery. In 2012/13 the department will continue to fund four non- governmental organisations, 38 Community Based programmes benefiting families in need. The budget allocated for this programme is R8,060 million.
