The MEC for Health and Social Development Ms Dikeledi Mahlangu will kick start a series of meetings with governance structures aimed at strengthening management of health facilities in the province.
These governance structures include clinic committees and hospital boards which have been established in terms of the National Health Act No 61 of 2003. These structures are established to enable community participation in the functioning and management of all health facilities to ensure that at all times these facilities are responsive to the needs of the communities they are established to serve.
We have established clinic committees in all our clinics in the province which are more than 270 and are also in a process to appoint hospital boards in all our 32 hospitals.
In the next five years government has identified health as one of its key priorities and all efforts should be made to ensure that health facilities work better to provide quality health care to all the people in the province. Governance structures are critical in this pursuit.
The meetings will be held in the three districts of the province starting tomorrow with the Ehlanzeni district which has 104 clinics and 11 hospitals:
