An opportunity for small-holder farmers across the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District to have access to local markets will be created, as MEC for the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Desbo Mohono will be launching the Taung Farmers’ Market on Saturday, 29 September 2012 at Taung Central Business Area, next to the Taung taxi rank.
Core to this sought-after market as drawn from the Mahikeng Farmer’ Market pilot is to reduce and or eliminate middle-men whereby produce will be sold directly from the suppliers to the consumers, and to avail fresh agricultural quality products to consumers at reasonable prices, thereby strengthening the local economy.
During the launch of the Farmers’ Market pilot project in Mahikeng in May this year, the Department and its partners committed to ensure the rolling out of the project to other districts after assessing its impact and viability.
“We have tried and tested the Farmers’ Market pilot project, and after four months of being on trial in Mahikeng, it has proved to be the way to go. We therefore move to Taung with confidence that farmers participating in this project will also ensure its success”, said MEC Desbo Mohono.
Taung is the second project site after Mahikeng, and plans to roll out the project to other two districts are already on course.
At the Taung Farmer’s Market smallholder farmers will sell fresh produce like fruit and vegetables as well as processed products such as dairy and meat products to local residents. This market will operate from 6h00 till 10h00 on Saturdays, on a fortnightly basis.
