MEC continues the back to school campaign, Elliotdale

The Honourable MEC for Eastern Cape Social Development and Special Programmes, Ms Pemmy Majodina will visit Ntsingizi Junior Secondary School, Bufumba Location, Elliotdale, tomorrow, 10 February 2010.

The MEC will handover school uniforms, sanitary towels and toiletries to 42 children. The children were assessed by social workers, and their families will also receive food parcels on the day. The Honourable MEC is continuing with the back to school campaign which kick-started late January, aimed at making the lives of young people better.

Children in the province, are faced with enormous challenges, these range from extreme poverty, physical and sexual abuse, neglect, substance abuse and loss of parents due to HIV and AIDS (which further adds to the creation of child headed households).

Last year, the department utilised R100 000, 00 to supply more than 300 children with school uniforms and suppliers. This year the department has increased the scope and budget. An amount of R3 million has been set aside for this campaign and 3,800 children will benefit.
