MEC Barry to launch an outreach programme in Joubertina

The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry will conduct an Community Stakeholder Engagement and Execute Crime Prevention Awareness Outreach campaign in Ravania sport ground, Joubertina on 7 May 2010.

This outreach is informed by MEC Barry's 2010/11 financial year policy speech, which reads as follow: "The Department of Safety and Liaison intends to make huge impact on the safety and Security needs of the people of the Eastern Cape. Our crime prevention campaigns approach will be people driven and provide a platform for multi-stakeholder collaboration".

The purpose of this outreach programme is to:

* mobilise services on wheels for the people of Joubertina and surrounding areas
* for government departments to exhibit their work and provide relevant information to the public
* encourage youth debates around crime prevention and social issues
* increase public participation in ensuring crime free society
* embark on a crime awareness march
* enhance the effectiveness of sport against crime social intervention
* strengthen relations between communities and South African Police Service (SAPS).
* strengthen inter-departmental and inter-governmental relations

The following institutions are going to form part of this outreach programme: Home Affairs, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Housing, Transport, Water Affairs, Public Works, MTN, Social Development, Koukamma municipality, Liquor Board and Road Accident Fund.

This is in line with the provincial growth and development plan (PGDP) which outlines an integrated crime prevention strategy. The Department of Safety and Liaison in consultation with communities, community leaders, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community policing forums has taken upon itself the task of implementing those parts of the strategy to which it is committed to.
