Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry, will officially launch the 2010 October Transport Month campaign with a transport sector career exhibition at Ngwenyathi High School, Nxarhuni Village, Newlands, outside East London on Monday, 4 October 2010 at 09h00.
MEC Barry will be honouring the commitment she made at the funeral of the late cadet seafarer Akhona Geveza in July this year that she would host an exhibition to inspire rural youth to consider transport related careers.
Geveza, who was regarded as one of the pioneers of the Maritime Transformation programme, tragically died in July 2010 while serving on a United Kingdom registered vessel that was sailing in Croatian waters.
MEC Barry described her loss as a serious setback but said government remained committed to ensure that more Akhona Gevezas are created, especially young black women from rural areas, to participate in the transport sector, particularly maritime.
On Monday morning, MEC Barry will first visit the Geveza family, where she will hand over groceries sponsored by Transnet Port Operations and South African Maritime Safety Association.
This year's October Transport Month theme is: "Transport–Moving South Africa to do More Together".
