With the 2010 FIFA World Cup around the corner, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry, will launch the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Road Rangers in Port Elizabeth on Friday, 21 May 2010 at 10h00.
The event will take place on the M17 next to Corobricks, between Motherwell and Swartkops River and will feature a prayer session in partnership with faith based organisations’ and communities. This prayer session forms part of our Road Safety Arrive Alive Campaign and is intended for the reduction of road accidents in the metro during the soccer tournament.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Road Rangers Programme was introduced three months ago through the appointment of 24 road rangers to patrol local roads in an effort to reduce the number of road accidents caused by stray animals.
Already 240 road rangers have been appointed throughout the province and 210 are expected to be appointed in this financial year. The department has allocated R16 million to pay all the 450 road rangers’ stipends.
In the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, the department has identified hotspots (hazardous areas), which include Rocklands, Greenbushes, Seaview, Witteklip and Fishers Corner. During the event, MEC Barry will hand over bicycles to these road rangers to patrol local roads.
