MEC Barry celebrates Nelson Mandela Day with Mdantsane Children Home

As part of her contribution to the Nelson Mandela Day build-up programme, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison Ghishma Barry will volunteer for 67 minutes putting new tiles at the Masizakhe Children’s Home in Mdantsane on Friday 16 July 2010 at 12h00.

MEC Barry has secured sponsorship for tiles after conducting a needs analysis at the home. This activity forms part of the Nelson Mandela Week activities that are taking place throughout the country to celebrate the International Nelson Mandela Day (18 July)  – a special day to celebrate our former President and icon’s life, work and struggle for justice, freedom and global peace.

President Jacob Zuma introduced the concept of Mandela Day Campaign to motivate a nationwide campaign to get our citizens involved in charitable activities which embrace the values and principles that Madiba epitomises.

The Mandela Day Campaign encourages people to use 67 minutes of their time to support their chosen charity or to perform community service. The 67 minutes symbolically represents the number of years our former president spent fighting for human rights and the abolition of apartheid.
