MEC Barry to address the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) gala dinner

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry, will deliver a keynote address at the South African Maritime Safety Authority gala dinner to be held tonight in Port Elizabeth.

The gala dinner is part of this weeks' programme of the Maritime Accident Investigators' International Forum (MAIIF) conference hosted by SAMSA in the Nelson Mandela Bay this week.

MAIIF is an international non-profit organisation (NPO) dedicated to the advancement of maritime safety and the prevention of marine pollution through the exchange of ideas, experiences and information acquired in marine accident investigation.

Its purpose is to promote and improve marine accident investigation and to foster cooperation and communication between marine accident investigators.

Its objectives are:

* To foster, develop and sustain a cooperative relationship among national marine investigators for the purpose of improving and sharing of knowledge in an international forum
* To improve maritime safety and the prevention of pollution through the dissemination of information gained in the investigative process
* To encourage through cooperation the development, recognition, implementation and improvement of related international instruments, where appropriate.

SAMSA as the authority championing South Africa's maritime safety regulations has been involved with MAIIF for a number of years, MAIIF is now in its 19th year and was held in Cape Town six years ago.

SAMSA as the regulator of our waters, found it necessary to be involved with MAIIF because as we are the regulators of safety, we also need to be aligned and in the know about the statistics of incidents and accidents.

Not only are we involved with them on an information level but we also host training courses within the year, these courses train our South African seafarers in internationally compliable courses. The aim is to work with MAIIF to reduce the number of incidents and accidents that happen at sea.

MEC Barry is expected to outline Eastern Cape's perspective on maritime and share our own experiences with regard to the transformation of the maritime industry.
