Marine anti-poaching chase boats launch and Military Veterans (anti-poaching unit) Parade Ceremony, Monday, 14 November 2011, Hermanus

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries invites you to join the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson, at the launch of its recently acquired anti-poaching speed chase boats and the Marine Anti-Poaching Projects’ Military Veterans Parade and Graduation Ceremony to be held on Monday, 14 November 2011 at the Hermanus New Harbour in the Western Cape at 9:30.

To boost its compliance capacity, the department has initiated the Western Cape Marine Anti-Poaching Project (WCMAPP) in 2009 with the employment of sixty military veterans. The veterans have recently completed a training programme which included legislator training, skippers training, safety and sea, marine first aid and fire fighting and will be awarded certificates at a graduation ceremony. In addition, and in support of its Integrated Fisheries Security Strategy (IFSS), the department is taking official delivery of recently acquired anti--poaching speed chase boats. The acquisition of the chase boats and the implementation of an ongoing capacity building and training programme, form part of continued efforts to bolster and enhance the enforcement capacity in an endeavor to protect marine resources in the coastal regions. In the context of global food security and with more than a third of the South African population residing along the coast, including a significant number of rural coastal communities, the protection of the country’s marine resources remains a priority for the department.

All media is invited to attend.
