Mandela Day

In celebration of Mandela Day, Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu will on Saturday, 17 July 2010, lead a voluntary community service project to improve the living conditions of the elderly at Vosloorus Old Age Home.

A team of volunteers, including the CEO of Anglo American’s Thermal Coal division, Mr Norman Mbhazima and the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council, Ms Ntombi Mekgwe, will clean, paint and pave the Vosloorus Old Age Home. Executives from the Department of Mineral Resources, Anglo Coal and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council will also be on hand to assist.

The project is part of the department's contribution to the '67 minutes for Mandela' campaign in honour of our former President’s 67 years of service to humanity. The voluntary is being held to celebrate Tata Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, which was officially named Nelson Mandela International Day by the United Nations General Assembly.

Minister Shabangu will also host a lunch and distribute gifts to the aged as part of the celebration.
