The world's first high-level, global conference bringing together the world's foremost expert on sports mega-events is due to take place in Johannesburg from 24 to 26 February this year.
The International Summit on Tourism, Sport and Mega-Events will be held under the auspices of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the United Nations (UN) body tasked with overseeing tourism and travel internationally. Local partners include South African Tourism, Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and the Department of Tourism.
It's fitting that a conference of this nature should be held in South Africa on the eve of the World Cup, which, together with the Olympics, is one of the two most important sports events in the world.
The summit will be preceded by a colloquium to discuss the sustainability of mega-events that is the ability of an event to have a positive effect long after it has taken place.
Topics under discussion will include the impact of mega-events on their host countries, as well as the positive, non-economic spin-offs that such events can have.
The event will be attended by high-level delegations from many international travel destinations, and will include government ministers, academics and recognised industry authorities.
