The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Local Government and Traditonal Affairs will be conducting oversight visits to various local municipalities in Bojanala and Dr. Ruth Segomotso Mompati districts from the 26 to 29 June 2012. The purpose of the visits is to get a full report on the support given by the Departments of Local Government and Traditional Affairs and Department of Finance to the municipalities.
The Committee will be addressing amongst others, a letter of intent to invoke Section 139 of the Constitution by Members of the Executive at the Madibeng Local Municipality; to engage municipalities on issues raised by Tribal Authorities; and to engage the municipalities on mismanagement of funds, maladministration and incomplete municipal projects.
Chairperson of the committee, Hon. Auchalie Mothupi said the visits will also kick start the “O re bone, Re go bone” campaign, which Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Supra Mahumapelo, pronounced on in his 2011/12 budget speech.
The “O re bone, Re go bone” campaign is taking parliament to the people, where Members of the Provincial Legislature will engage face to face with the public during Legislature sittings held in the districts. Issues will be raised from sectoral meetings, deliberated and adopted in a relevant portfolio committee, and then tabled in those sittings, in the presence of the relevant public in that area as per the Constitution requirements during sittings of parliament, committee and sectoral meetings.
“We also want the public to understand our role as Members of the Legislature in aligning government institutions to follow proper procedure to improve service delivery,” said Hon. Mothupi.
The oversight meetings will be held at the Madibeng Local Municipality Chamber on Tuesday, 26 June and at Greater Taung Local Municipality Chamber on Wednesday, 27 June. On Thursday, 28 June the meetings will be held at Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality Chamber and at Naledi Local Municipality Chamber on Friday, 29 June. All meetings will start at 09h00.
